Wilkes Family Cemetery - Charlie Hope
The cemetery is approx. 75 ft. east of Grandy Road and approximately 2 miles north of Gov. Harrison Pkwy, (Hwy 58). It is directly across the road from the driveway of a home bearing the address of 1935 Grandy Road, Brodnax, VA. This old Wilkes family home is said to be the oldest inhabited house in Brunswick County, VA. This cemetery measures approx. 60 ft x 30 ft and is enclosed by a brick wall ranging in height from 2 ft to 4 ft with no opening for an entrance. Fourteen marked graves are here and a few others, unmarked, may be. The transcription of this cemetery was published as “Wilkes Burial Ground - 'Charlie's Hope,' Brunswick County, Virginia,” The Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 15, pp. 135-36 (1971).

Davidson, Fecit.
Wilkes was a sergeant in the 11th Regiment, Continental line, at Hillsborough, N.C., in November 1779. “Davidson, Fecit” is the Petersburg, Virginia, stonecutter's mark, fecit being Latin for make or construct.
